On June 8, 2021, Governor Mike DeWine signed a bill which recognizes Aug. 31 as “Ohio Overdose Awareness Day.” We will host our 8th Annual International Overdose Awareness Day Rally on August 31,2022 at Canal Market, Newark OH 43055. It is our hope that you will want to be a part of this rally and join us in honoring those that have died due to the disease of addiction here in Licking County. If you would like to honor your loved one, you can bring a picture to the event to be displayed on our memorial table. You can also submit their name to be added to the 2022 memorial shirts. Many of our friends and families in Newark, Ohio have been impacted by the addiction epidemic. According to Harm Reduction Ohio "Drug adulteration — an inevitable and unavoidable result of drug prohibition and the drug war — is the cause of the overdose epidemic". Provisional data from CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics indicate there were an estimated 107,622 drug overdose deaths in the United States during 2021, an increase of 15% from the 93,655 deaths estimated in 2020. Licking County is in the top 23 counties in Ohio. According to the epidemiologist from the Ohio Department of Health on 07/07/2022, 63 was the unofficial number of overdose deaths in Licking County for 2021 up from 47 in 2020.
