'Change of Perspective in Mathematics'

Thursday, September 28 - 7:00 PM

Denison University and the Gordon Lecture Series welcomes Professor of Mathematics at Dartmouth College and one of the North American co-directors for the Aquincum Institute of Technology (AIT) study abroad program in Budapest, Hungary Michael Orrison Jr, presenting "Change of Perspective in Mathematics."

"Change of Perspective in Mathematics," promises to be an enlightening exploration of the central role that changes in perspective play within the world of mathematics. Orrison will delve into the fascinating connections between various mathematical concepts and the profound impact of shifting our viewpoint.

Change of perspective is ubiquitous in mathematics. Consider, for example, equivalent fractions, change of coordinates, u-substitution, Bayes’ Theorem, or even the simple fact that 2 + 3 = 3 + 2. In this talk, he’ll offer some reflections on the unifying role that change of perspective plays when we learn, share, create, and discover mathematics. Orrison will also share how conversations over the years with teachers, students, and his own children have shaped his understanding of the power of change of perspective.

This event is designed for computer science, software engineering, and computational biology majors, as well as anyone with an interest in the world of mathematics. Please join us in welcoming Michael Orrison for what promises to be an inspiring evening of mathematical exploration.
